An El Paso, Texas police officer is in hot water after he allegedly pulled a gun on a group of kids. While it is important to note that the group of unruly boys did spew expletives at the officer, many people still insist he went way too far. According to CNN, a video of the incident has been circulating on Facebook and people are appalled by what they’ve seen. The now-viral video has received more than five million times in less than a week.
Heated Exchange At Rec Center:
For those who haven’t viewed the disturbing video, it begins while an altercation is underway at the Seville Community Center in El Paso, Texas. According to KVIA, officers were dispatched to the rec center after receiving a call about trespassers. The officer, in question, has another young child against a fence as the group of at least six young boys yell expletives at him. Then, the officer pulls his gun from the holster, turns and points it at the children and says, “back up, mother******.” While it’s no secret that the children were being disrespectful, the officer was also out of line.
See the video below:
As the video continues, the officer could be seen pinning the young boy’s head down with his knee. As the children continued to scream statements like, “You can’t do that to him!” a second officer could be seen dragging the young boy into the street and handcuffing him with his face to the pavement. However, it doesn’t stop there. As the children continue screaming, the first officer whips out his baton and points it toward the group of children. The video was reportedly filmed by the arrested boy’s brother. Despite the details, the boy insisted he was okay saying, “It’s all good,” he said. “We are going to put a report on these two fools. It’s all good.”
Based on the video, the children’s words didn’t visibly pose the type of threat that would justify him pulling a gun on them. For that reason, alone, people have flooded the El Paso Police Department Facebook page with tons of complaints. Even the mother of both boys – the one filming and the one being arrested – insists the officers were excessively forceful. She also claimed the officer was choking her son.
A Slap On The Wrist?:
Despite endangering children by pulling his gun and the obvious use of excessive force, apparently, the officer won’t be losing his job. On Saturday, July 7, El Paso Deputy City Manager Dionne L. Mack and El Paso Police Department spokesman Sgt. Enrique Carrillo held a press conference where they addressed the incident that has so many people in an uproar. Both Mack and Carillo explained that an adult and a minor were “arrested for interfering with the duties of a police officer.” Carillo also claims the footage is just a “small piece of a puzzle.” “What you’ve seen (in the video) is just a small piece of a puzzle,” Carrillo said. “The investigation needs to come to a conclusion before we can make a determination as to whether there were policies or protocols that were violated.”
They also confirmed the officer had been placed on desk duty. The incident is now being investigated by Internal Affairs. “The whole investigation process with IA (Internal Affairs) will determine whether the officer followed protocol, look at all of the related incidents that surrounded that, take an opportunity to (do) interviews,” Mack said. “And go through that entire process, so all the facts and data are gathered before any conclusions are drawn.”
