While a lot of attention has been given to the murders of Black men at the hands of police and inner-city crime, a new report issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that Black women have the highest rates of homicide of all other women. We can agree that Black people are under attack in this country, but these statistics might make you re-think who the enemies of our people really are.
The CDC analyzed homicide data from 18 states that occurred between 2003 and 2014. The researchers found that Black women are killed at a rate of 4.4 per 100,000 people which tops the list. Indigenous women come in at 4.3 per 100,000 while White, Latina, and Asian women fall somewhere between 1 and 2 per 100,000.
Who Is Doing The Killing?
What is more disturbing is that 51.3 percent of Black women’s deaths are being caused by their boyfriends and spouses. Latinos lead this category with a domestic violence death rate of 61 percent. According to Tiffany Turner-Allen who is the program director of UJIMA, The National Center on Violence in the Black Community, abuse escalates to homicide when women attempt to leave the relationship.
“Black women are really impacted around violence as a whole, where we’re talking about domestic violence, trafficking, or sexual violence,” Turner-Allen said. “The numbers skew very high.”
Intimate Partner Violence
The CDC says that intimate partner violence (IPV) is an epidemic. However, Black women are affected disproportionately. Statistics show that they are twice as likely to be killed by a man they are involved with than White women are. Emiko Petrosky, one of the science officers and authors of the CDC report says that IPV is a grave concern.
“What’s notable is that this is across all racial ethnic groups,” Petrosky said. “Intimate partner violence can affect anyone…it really just shows that [this] is a public health problem.”
Yet and still, Black women only account for 13 percent of this nation’s population. But of all the homicides against women, it is our sisters who make up half of that number. Most of the murders are being committed by our own men. Clearly we have some work to do within our own communities.
