Over the past few months we’ve seen various different hashtags trend on social media. #SwimmingWhileBlack, #ShoppingWhileBlack, #DrivingWhileBlack, #StudyingWhileBlack, etc. All these hashtags tell a story of black folk doing the most simplest of things, but for some reason getting the police called on them by white folk.
One answer to this problem is Melanin Enterprise. The app has been created by savvy businesswoman EMichele Paul. It’s main feature is the “All Black Everything” City Guide.
It helps clients discover the best Black-owned restaurants, shops, hotels and bars in America! All you have to do is open the app and you will able to locate the nearest black owned business within 100 miles.
The app also allows you to check-in to the establishment, read ratings and reviews, find business hours and contact the business directly.
The App Is For Anyone Who Has Experienced Racism
Melanin Enterprise is the brainchild of EMichele Paul. She is a disabled, combat Marine Corps veteran from Beaumont, Texas. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, she became interested in tech.
After earning her bachelor degree in Communications she created Melanin Enterprise. The app’s purpose is to empower the Black community and grow our economic independence. EMichele conducted a poll about 8 months ago and 73% of the people polled said that they would support Black-owned businesses if they knew where they were located.
The businesswoman believes so strongly in her app, she funded the development and marketing of Melanin Enterprise herself. EMichele used more than $20,000 of her own savings to make Melanin Enterprise a success.
The single mother says, “I want to know that if my two sons have to go somewhere unfamiliar to them, they will know what hotels, restaurants, or coffee shops will not shun them away or harass them because of the color of their skin. I want this not only for my children but for every person who is discriminated against just for being who they were born to be.”
The App Also Features A Social Network
Currently, Melanin Enterprise has two main features, the “All Black Everything” City Guide and an exclusive, members only, group chat called, RealTalk.. RealTalk!
Members of RealTalk.. RealTalk! can talk openly about ideas, plan and organize movements or possibly find new friends.
EMichele says of her brand, “I want Black business owners to download the Melanin Enterprise app as Business Partners to increase their sales, grow their consumer base, strengthen brand awareness, and connect with a community that wants them to succeed, in a positive and supportive setting. This app is going to give the black community something that it’s never seen or felt before on the internet… the freedom to be ourselves and own our destiny. This social network was created for us, by us, and it’s going to grow with us and stay with us!”
