Serena Williams has often been a source of inspiration for fans everywhere. As a 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena is the epitome of success, but apparently, there’s someone who isn’t so fond of her anymore: professional female boxer and two-time boxing gold medalist, Claressa Shields.
So, why would Shields have a problem with Serena? Well, the opposition reportedly stems from a run-in the ladies had during the 2016 Olympics. According to Shields, Serena allegedly disrespected her and a number of other athletes. During a recent radio interview, Shields recalled her first encounter with Serena explaining what happened.
Fallout at 2016 Olympics:
The first time Shields crossed paths with Serena, she was with her coach, Kay Karoma, and Shakur Stevenson. They noticed Serena with three other women. Initially inspired by Serena, Shields decided to speak to her, but things didn’t exactly go the way Shields may have envisioned. Shields claims Serena actually ignored her, according to Hype magazine.
“I’m not the type of person to just jump on somebody so I was just like ‘Hey Serena’ and there was nobody around,” she said. “I talk very loud so when I said it, she didn’t say nothing. She just acted like she couldn’t hear me and just kept walking straight. After that, Shakur Stevenson was just like, ‘Did she just ignore you?’ And then after she heard Shakur say that, she just looked over and said ‘hey’ and kept going so that was strike number one for Serena Williams and I let that go even though I was very upset.”

Can I Get A Picture?:
Like most people who try to give others the benefit of the doubt, Shields thought Serena may have been having a bad day. But, the second time she ran into her, that encounter reportedly wasn’t great either. Shields went on to slam Serena for her attitude and she didn’t hold back at all.
When Shields’ coach wanted to take a picture of her with Serena, that also led to a major nosedive. She claims Serena ignored them again and acted as if she didn’t want to be touched. At that point, Shields was done playing nice with Serena.
“So during the walk, I walk in with Coach K and he tells me, ‘I’m going to get you that picture with Serena Williams,’ and I told him, ‘No I don’t want no picture, as a matter fact, you can ask her if you want, but I’m not going to ask her because I see how she is now,’” she recalled. “So, Coach K went and tapped her and her and the girls that were with her, they ignored him she acted like she didn’t feel him touch her. She finally looked back and saw it was him and walked away so fast and I just was like, ‘Who the hell does she think she is?’”
Shields admitted she’d taken to social media to send Serena a private message about her rude behavior. But she ultimately decided to delete the message and just block Serena altogether.
Shields interview comes just a few weeks after Serena was reprimanded during the U.S. Open. For those who missed that, Serena ended up losing to Naomi Osaka. The devastating loss sparked a heated debate, because some have argued Serena allowed her temper to get the best of her ,while others insist she’s only human and sexism played a big part in her being fined.
Needless to say, Shields account has raised questions for a few fans and they’re wondering about Serena’s side to this story. Serena has yet to respond, but it would be quite interesting to hear what she has to say about it all.
