NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — After you hear why Oprah despises gum-chewing, you’ll totally understand her position. Her cringing story is one from childhood, but it still holds weight and affect today.
As it seems, there are things on Oprah’s need-to-know list that the general public wouldn’t necessarily have a clue. Specifically, if you’re looking to do any work with her — or simply be around her — gum is one of those things not welcomed.
During a recent interview with Stephen Colbert at the Ed Sullivan theater, Oprah Winfrey touched on the interesting topic seemingly by happenstance.
While mentioning her new movie, A Wrinkle In Time — along with noting co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, Oprah suggests that the two actresses are intensely talkative.

Yet, it’s part of their particular personalities that helped bring into focus her “phobia.” When Colbert asked about it, Oprah interjected, “It’s not a phobia!”
“I have some strong feelings about it. I intensely dislike it. It comes from my childhood. I grew up poor in Mississippi, and my grandmother — and this is absolutely no hyperbole whatsoever — my grandmother used to try to save the gum.”
“So she would, literally — [like] that country song about the gum on the bedpost at night — put it on the bedpost,” Oprah grudgingly describes. “She would put it in the cabinet and would put it everywhere else.”
According to Oprah, as a child, she would end up bumping into her grandmother’s old gum wads, all rubbing against her.
“And you know what it’s like when you’ve taken it out of your mouth, and it’s been out for a couple of weeks,” Oprah gestures while explaining. “It’s bad; so, I was afraid of it.”
According to the billionaire, it’s not good for people who want to be around her, those who are chewing gum. She tells Colbert that she’s had it barred from her company.
As in, anything pertaining to her productions, business, etc. — if “Oprah” is your boss — gum is not allowed.
COLBERT: “Well, what happens if you’re out some place, and someone walks in chewing gum??”
OPRAH: “It’s not good…It’s barred at my offices. Nobody is allowed. But, when I go out into the world, I can’t bar it. I have no powers there.”
According to her, everyone she works with knows about her stance on gum.
“Do NOT chew GUM in front of me…”
Pretty much, “it’s a thing,” Winfrey notes. She goes so far as to say, it simply creeps her out. And although she realizes film crews are chewing gum, there are moments when she just has to ignore and pretend she doesn’t see it.
One case in particular is her co-star, Reese Witherspoon. Possibly, Reese is an avid gum-chewer. Regarding a situation, Oprah mentions as follows.
“Actually, Reese comes up to me on the set and she’s [like], ‘You want a piece of gum?’ And she’s chewing it, like that [demonstrating], and it’s green! So, like, if it’s colored, I just go crazy…”
However, she says Reese didn’t know about her disdain regarding gum, and she let her co-star know she has a serious problem with it. Oprah says Reese responded, “What kind of problem? [Still chewing just as intensely].”
“And she goes, ‘Oh, that’s too bad.’ And she just walks off.”

OPRAH GETS A SIGN FROM ‘GOD’
Aside from the gum, during the interview with Colbert, Oprah talks about another, more-widely known topic of discussion as well — her potential 2020 run for presidency.
While previously Oprah has noted it’s never been her intention or desire to run for president, it’s still a hot topic on the hearts of her fans and others who’d prefer anyone other than Donald J. Trump.
When Colbert asks for the billionaire mogul to reconsider due to the overwhelming support she already has backing her as a potential candidate, Winfrey responds as follows.
“I feel humbled and honored by that. It just isn’t something I would … … I’ve said this before. I would know it.”
According to Oprah, she’s very much in touch with her “inner GPS”…in touch with God, overall. However, she says God has shown her nothing regarding a green light for “2020.”
And although she has gained excessive support online, she says that’s still not a game changer.
“Those are all people outside. You know what that is. If a thousand people tell you to do something, but you don’t feel it inside yourself — or if a thousand people say, ‘Oh that looks good on you, girl,’ and you KNOW it doesn’t … … [digressing] no. I haven’t.”
Almost immediately, “God” — or the image they want to portray — shows up to ask Oprah to run. The witty billionaire plays along with the gimmick, seemingly amused.
Yet, all in all, she still gives a stern “no.” So, it looks like it’s not happening — unless there’s a REAL sign from God, right?
