A few days ago, LiAngelo Ball found himself at the center of controversy when he and his teammates were caught shopliftingduring a team-sponsored trip to China. The teen has just begun to make headlines for his skills on the court, and now he’s already facing bad press. Then to make matters worse, he was detained overseas. Several reports have offered conflicting details about how Ball and his teammates were released. Some news outlets say Trump stepped in, but others, including UCLA officials, claim that technically wasn’t the case. Now LaVar Ball is offering his take on the situation and you can only imagine what he had to say.
Not Buyin’ It:
According to Deadline, LaVar Ball recently appeared at an ESPN press conference following the players’ return to the states. At the time, he was asked about Trump intervening on behalf of his son. Although LiAngelo thanked Trump for his assistance, LaVar made it clear he isn’t buyin’ it. “Who?” Ball said to ESPN. “What was (Trump) over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.” Although Trump took to Twitter claiming the players were facing 10 years behind bars for their actions, LaVar downplayed the statement insisting “it ain’t that big of a deal.”
In fact, LaVar Ball doesn’t even seem to be upset with his son over the lapse in judgment. ““As long as my boy’s back here, I’m fine,” Ball told ESPN. “I’m happy with how things were handled. A lot of people like to say a lot of things that they thought happened over there. Like I told him, ‘They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes.’ I’m from L.A. I’ve seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses. My son has built up enough character that one bad decision doesn’t define him. Now if you can go back and say when he was 12 years old he was shoplifting and stealing cars and going wild, then that’s a different thing.”
It appears LaVar is more outraged by Trump’s statements as opposed to his son’s actions. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be facing consequences for his actions.
There Are Still Consequences:
According to ESPN, LiAngelo Ball and his teammates will be suspended while the University’s athletic program and Office of Student Conduct to investigate the situation. They will not be allowed to travel with the team, practice, or suit up for the team’s home games pending the outcome of the investigation. LaVar Ball kept his cool in front of the cameras, but hopefully, he does have a talk with his son behind closed doors. Careless actions like this could easily cost him his career. Such a promising future does not need to be wasted on stolen luxury items he’d actually be able to afford in the future if he stays focused and works hard.
