These stories are becoming all too familiar. As reported by ABC7NY, the body of a missing 11-year-old Keansburg, New Jersey girl named AbbieGail Smith, was found with the help of K-9’s behind where she lived the Hancock Street Apartments complex.
The young girl was reported missing Wednesday night had been last seen by family members near her apartment around 7:45 p.m. and family called about an hour later to report she was missing according to the source.
Law officials are treating her death as a homicide and officials state that the young girls remains were found behind her home near a large container around 10:45 p.m. as posted by the source:
“We were really hopeful that we would find her,” Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said at a news conference. “It’s a punch in the gut for all of us in this community, especially with law enforcement.”
A maintenance person alleges that the area behind the building is not a secure location and a utility room located behind the home had recently been left unlocked:
“Bathroom-size and it’s dark and it’s creepy looking in there. All you have is power meters,” said Victor Sloma, maintenance worker.
Someone’s Out There
Reportedly, authorities did not release the findings and cause of AbbieGail’s death, but officials believe that her cause of death was intentional:
“It disgusts me, it makes me sick,” neighbor Nicole said. “I fear for my own children, because this should not even occur. We’re talking a baby.”
A candlelit vigil was held on Thursday for the young girl and Keansburg school superintendent John Niesz issued a statement after one of their students body was found :

People familiar with the family and the young girl spoke fondly of the innocent life that is now lost:
“She was a very happy girl. She never was like angry or sad at anyone or anything. She was never worried. She was always just peaceful and happy,” said William Williams, a family friend.
Williams is AbbieGail’s brothers friend, who saw her last around 6 p.m. according to the source. He stated she seemed normal and her usual self, while playing outside carefree. When AbbieGail’s brother said she went missing, Williams initially thought he was playing a joke and “To wake up and see that she was dead, it broke my heart because I loved her and she was amazing,” as posted by the source.
The investigation into Abbiegail’s death is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information to please call the Keansburg Police Department at 732-787-0600.
