Laila Ali learned a lot from her father Muhammad Ali about the sport of boxing. And while she can’t recall him ever cooking anything, she remembers that he loved to eat. Burgers and her stewed chicken recipe were two of his favorites.
Sadly, The Greatest of All-Time won’t be at the table for Thanksgiving anymore, but she has dedicated her upcoming cookbook, Food For Life, to her dad which comes out Jan. 23. Laila took to her Instagram account on Thanksgiving to showcase her cooking skills and give everybody a taste of what to expect from her new project.
The self-taught cook told People Magazine that she wrote the book with the intention of marrying nutrition and flavor. As an athlete, Laila learned early on that what you put in your body has a direct impact on its performance. But just because food is fuel, that doesn’t mean that it can’t taste good.
“I learned that the purpose of food was to nourish my body, because it was going to affect my performance either way,” she said. “I wasn’t going to eat a slice of cake — not because it was going to make me fat, but because the sugar was going to affect me in the boxing ring.”
The undefeated championship boxer spent hours in the kitchen preparing food for meat-eaters and vegans alike. She used fresh ingredients to prepare a variety of main and side dishes. Even her husband helped out playing sous chef while she cooked and jammed out to some of her favorite 90’s hits.

Looks like her new cookbook will be a bestseller if this dinner is any indication. Hope you all had a great holiday!
