MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE — A family is reeling in pain after one young child’s life meet an untimely end. Now, the mother and father are in jail on homicide charges.
According to WREG-3, West Memphis Police have arrested a mother who was wanted on homicide charges. Those particular charges came at the cost of her 17-month-old son.
A HORRIBLE THING
Kadaysha Bedford, 34, was wanted on second-degree murder and child endangerment charges after her baby swallowed a lethal amount of cocaine, authorities mention.
According to police, on May 2, Bedford and the 1-year-old’s father — Anthony Lewis, 37 — were dealing cocaine from a hotel room at the Crown Inn.
Reportedly, Bedford and Lewis left some of the drugs on one of the tables; that’s where her 17-month-old son discovered it.
According to West Memphis Police Captain Joe Baker, the child got a hold of his mother’s cocaine and swallowed it.
“It was obvious on the baby’s mouth that he’d eaten a large amount,” Baker mentioned to the source.
Allegedly, the couple might not have gone to the hospital immediately upon finding the child unresponsive. WREG-3 reports that they left the hotel for 45 minutes, then arrived with the child at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
Captain Baker states the child was still breathing when his parents left the hotel with him. Had they gotten to a hospital in a timely manner, there was possibly still a chance go save him.
However, doctors were immediately suspicious of the situation and called police due to the amount of time the child had been dead.
After an autopsy was conducted last week, the findings concluded the child died from cocaine ingestion — thus, the mother’s and father’s charges came thereafter.
Yet, that wasn’t all apparently.
In addition to second-degree murder, Bedford was also wanted on three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. According to the source, there were also three other children in the room at the time of the incident — ages 2, 6, and 7.
Reportedly, Lewis was also arrested in a separate incident and is already in custody.
WREG-3 states that he faces the same charges as Bedford; but also, he faces illegal possession of a firearm.
Currently, he’s in jail on two bonds of $25,000 as well as another for $125,000. According to police, this isn’t the first time he’s been arrested for drug dealing.
For now, the other three children are in a family member’s custody; likewise, the Department of Children and Family Services is involved.
As for the operator of the Crown Inn hotel where the incident occurred, Bob Patel, he emphasizes that he can’t take responsibility for what happens inside the motel’s rooms.
“What they do in the room I don’t know,” Patel tells the source.
