[Video] Ashanti: ‘I’ve Been Betrayed’

Posted On : 03/03/2018

UNITED STATES — Ashanti tossed a little shade as she let her fans know she’s been betrayed in the past. Her theme of the day seems to have been “say less.”

During a recent concert, before going into her “The Woman You Love” track, Ashanti didn’t miss the opportunity to speak on her life experiences. After relieving herself of a wardrobe piece, the singer mentions as follows.

“See, I just really want to make sure y’all really understand exactly what I’m saying because…I’ve been betrayed before — publicly at that.”

Immediately following that statement, a fan erupts almost uncontrollably with “F**K NELLY!!

After hearing her fan’s reaction, the singer’s feedback was simple, yet still complex — but all summed up with “WORD!”

According to Shade Room, Ashanti was letting the world know how she felt about Nelly. And, it sounds like she’s never going back. However, she explains that later.

US Weekly reports that, for nearly a decade, Ashanti and Nelly kept their secret relationship in tact. Things were so under-the-thumb, they actually had a private break-up as well.

Largely, several people don’t exactly know why she and the rapper broke off their seemingly-glamorous relationship. However, from a look at various reports, one things seems to be apparent. Ashanti ultimately felt betrayed.

According to Bossip, it was Nelly who severed their relationship after allegedly finding that Ashanti had cheated on him. The source states that the rapper had constantly been “on and off” regarding his seriousness as a couple.

However, supposedly, he came forth in full admittance about his “wrongdoings” during their time together — according to the source.

At the time of the break-up, Bossip reported as follows.

“For years Nelly has been hearing rumors that Ashanti was sleeping around, but he didn’t want to believe the rumors. It’s never been a secret that Shanti ain’t exactly sweet and innocent and amongst industry folk it is common lore that Irv Gotti hit that. But for the longest time Cornell chose to disregard rumors that Shanti had been passed around amongst rappers like Jay-Z and Nas as well as among lesser known producers, like Chink Santana…Long story short — Nelly was no longer able to buy Ashanti’s story about Chink. And if the stories about Chink were true, how many others were as well? That’s why after those lavish birthday parties he threw for her — Nelly closed the door on Ashanti for the last time.

The source mentioned that their information was an exclusive from an anonymous person close to the couple.

In a 2010 interview with Rap-Up, Nelly laid out why he hadn’t married Ashanti yet. He basically labeled their situation as “really good friends.”

I think that’s the thing that people really don’t understand, and I say that because…you know, it’s like society puts pressure on you,” the rapper mentions. “They wanna see a certain relationship. You see what I’m saying? But if that relationship don’t work, society doesn’t take the responsibility when it don’t work.

Nelly continues as follows.

“I think you really have to be friends first. I think that’s the thing. It’s not about how long it takes because there’s no time limit on this…I’m not a person that wants to get married more than once…if I’mma do it, I’mma do it. And that’s it. You’re dying if you leave me.”

However, as the interview continued, Nelly let it be known that — at that time — he was simply married to his work instead.

However, Ashanti had quite the different view of the situation than what Nelly explained. During an interview with Meredith Vieira, via The Meredith Vieira Show, the singer laid out her after-thoughts regarding her ex-relationship with the St.Louis rapper.

“I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out-of-character. I’ve been betrayed, and I feel like, um…again, you just have to grow. You have to grow up. You have to accept responsibility for the things that you do. You know, I’m not a big fan of people being cowards…so I just really think it’s important to know yourself and know what you want…and get it.”

In addition, according to Ashanti, she and Nelly will NEVER get back together.

In an interview with Ebro Darden and Laura Styles, the singer explained her position on their future — rather, the lack thereof, as reports Madame Noire. Ebro asked, “Are you guys getting back together again?

She responded as follows.

“Negative. Nelly and I are kind of in the space where, I’m kinda like focusing on my career, he’s focusing on what he’s doing, you know there’s a lot of things that happened this year, you know a lot of things kinda went public more than other things have gone public before, you know what I’m saying? And um, I kinda just…I have to do me. We’re in that space right now and there are things that were said and things that were done, that probably shouldn’t have been said or done, but they have been.”

Prior to her recent concert shade, the singer was spotted by TMZ at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) around October 2017. A local reporter asked her thoughts on Nelly’s situation regarding the sexual abuse allegation.

Ashanti referred the TMZ reporter to her newest single, which happened to be titled “Say Less.” Although the reporter seemed entertained by the singer’s response, he kept attempting to clarify whether this was her actual response — especially since it would denote a bit of shade toward the St.Louis rapper.

Are you from New York?” Ashanti asked the reporter, since he mentioned using the phrase often, himself. “So you know the term; that’s so funny.

However, after seeing the shade tossed during her recent concert, maybe she meant it as the reported inferred?

Note: If you’re out the loop, “say less” is a phrase people use in place of “say no more.” Or, if used derogatorily, another definition Urban Dictionary gives is: “A phrase used when you are done with someone’s bulls**t and you want them to stop talking.” Likewise, Urban Thesaurus gives an array of similar phrases to help explain.

This is quite the awkward post-relationship situation. However, after looking at it for what it is, it’s really no different than any regular, everyday relationship after a break-up. Sometimes…a lot of times…there’s shade thrown.

Fortunately though, it doesn’t happen in all cases. Nevertheless, we’d love to know your thoughts about the situation. Or do you choose to “say less”?
